Director: Gavin Hood Stars: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: An origins story that follows the early life of James Howlett (Jackman), also known as Logan, and best known as Wolverine. The chronicle of his younger years as a mutant connects to his relationship and eventual falling out with Victor Creed/Sabretooth (Schreiber), and his fateful entry into the Weapons X project, the governmental program that turns willing and unwilling beings into living weapons. THE BUZZ: Media-friendly producer Lauren Shuler Donner promises a dark look into the James Howlett's backstory (call it Dark Knight effect), but that hasn't gelled with reports that Fox wants/wanted a more PG-13 take on their first foray into the events that lead up to X-Men. Said reports came after Hugh Jackman's surprise appearance at Comic-Con 2008, where his boundless enthusiasm for the project, which was outfitted in a barely dry reel of footage from the set, almost eclipsed the frenzy for the other big 2009 superhero movie, Watchmen. However, the advantage this project has is its ability to spin-off different characters into their own films; most notably, Ryan Reynolds's Deadpool, a poorly kept secret-in-development. Between this story and the reports of mutant cameos aplenty, I think Logan is the anti-hero to beat this year. Director: Mark Waters Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Emma Stone (Full Cast) Studio: New Line Cinema The Plot: At his younger brother's wedding, a committed bachelor/womanizer (McConaughey) is haunted by his romantic past. THE BUZZ: You might remember this one from circa 2003, when a post-Gigli Ben Affleck backed away from starring in another romantic comedy. So, yeah, I guess it's somewhat ironic that Jennifer Garner wound up cast in the project years later, and I have to imagine (without digging up a copy of the script) that her character, the sister of the bride, winds up domesticating the wild McConaughey here. That's what has to happen according to the genre's rules, right? But I feel like that is going against what makes McConaughey sexy, and he want him untamed, roaming, and only capable of lust, and I imagine director Mark Waters (who here reunites with one-time mean girl Lacey Chabert!) has a way to keep his star's desirable qualities intact. Director: J.J. Abrams Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: The origin story of Captain James T. Kirk, Spock and the crew of the USS Enterprise before they had boldly gone where no man had gone before.
THE BUZZ: One look (okay maybe two) at the trailer and it's safe to say this isn't your grandfather's Star Trek. With a Spock vs. Kirk fist fight, steamy sex scenes, Shaun of the Dead cracking jokes and is that Harold from Harold and Kumar (!?), this doesn't even come close to being your older brother's TNG. Early reports call it "phenomenal". So, perhaps handing this tired franchise over to the young Mr. Abrams may have been just what it needed to live long and ... Director: Benny Boom Stars: Mos Def, Mike Epps, Donald Faison (Full Cast) Studio: Summit Entertainment The Plot: When a UPS driver delivers a package containing bricks of cocaine to the wrong address, it sets into motion a battle of wills and wits between the dealer, the intended recipients, and the people who have the drugs and plan to sell them off. THE BUZZ: Summit Entertainment is flush with cash and cache post-Twilight, and hopefully they'll maximize their resources to turn this dark comedy, which sounds to me like Pineapple Express cut with Friday, into an early summer hit. The cast, which includes Wood Harris (the former drug kingpin on "The Wire"), is note-perfect, and hopefully the green behind-the-camera talent found a balance between humor and suspense. Word on the street is quiet thus far, though ... Message Boards: LAUREN LONDON + MIKE EPPS | if you enjoyed this film... Director: Donald Petrie Stars: Nia Vardalos, Richard Dreyfuss, Rachel Dratch (Full Cast) Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures The Plot: A travel guide (Vardalos) rediscovers her romantic side, with a very unlikely match, as she whisks a group of tourists around Greece. THE BUZZ: Everybody needs love and affection, and the likeable, relatable Nia Vardalos also deserves a career reboot -- it's totally not her fault that a million copycats lusted after her My Big Fat Greek Wedding success, quickly squeezing the life (and viability) out of indie film. Also needing a certain amount of resuscitation is director Donald Petrie, who rode high earlier this decade but quickly retired to Blandsville. A note Fox Searchlight: Nice counterprogramming here. Director: Nick Moore Stars: Emma Roberts, Aidan Quinn, Natasha Richardson (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: A rebellious Malibu princess (Roberts) is shipped off to a strict English boarding school by her father.
THE BUZZ: The thing is, Emma Roberts was supposed to be famous by now, but the extra-safe Nancy Drew failed her talent a couple years ago, which probably influenced Wild Child's come-and-go release dates. It will be interesting to see if teens respond more to Bad Girl Emma than her sweeter side; young European ladies bought into it, where the movie made $15 million last summer. But how wild can a rated-PG affair be, really? Especially when Ms. Roberts was 16 when she made this, and her crush, Johnny Pacar, is ten years her senior. Director: Ron Howard Stars: (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Releasing The Plot: Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) finds himself in Rome, where he has to race against time to prevent the Illuminati, a secret society, from putting in motion a terrorist act that could destroy the Vatican. He's aided in his quest by the beautiful Italian scientist Vittoria Vetri (Ayelet Zurer). THE BUZZ: This Da Vinci Code prequel was one of the first casualites of the writers' strike, which took screenwriter Akiva Goldsman away from the keyboard and onto the picket line. No matter -- it should make a mint-load of money anyway, and be predictable if handsome fun. Director Ron Howard did make a few interesting choices, though: the relatively unknown Zurer as the female lead (you might remember her as Eric Bana's wife in Munich) and the nice one-two supporting punch of Ewan McGregor and Stellan Skarsgård. We're hoping one of them steps into Ian McKellen's scenery-chewing shoes. Message Boards: Vittoria?! Director: Stars: Sacha Baron Cohen (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: Flamboyant Austrian fashion reporter Bruno (Cohen) travels the world in search of the latest style trends.
THE BUZZ: Diss all you want about Cohen's lesser-than-Borat creation from "Da Ali G Show," but we can't get enough of the Bruno sightings: from fashion runways and cage fights to baggage claim carousels and political rallies, it's a far better buzz-builder than anything, say, the The Love Guru conjured up. Director: Rian Johnson Stars: Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo (Full Cast) Studio: Summit Entertainment The Plot: A pair of brothers and veteran conmen (Brody and Ruffalo) target an enigmatic wealthy woman (Weisz) as their potential last job, fully unaware of the twists in the road ahead of them.
THE BUZZ: Bloom is writer-director Rian Johnson's follow up to Brick, one of the most-debated films within IMDb circles (just so you know). What gets us excited here is: the casting of Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) as the brothers' accomplice; knowing that filming occurred all over Europe and Asia; anticipating Johnson's crafted dialogue and his second attempt at fooling his audience. But what bums us out? The studio's hide and seek release strategy, which once positioned the film for late 2008, then really late 2008, then spring 09, and now early summer ... Director: McG Stars: Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: John Connor (Bale) is joined in his attempt to defeat Skynet and its army of Terminators by Marcus Wright (Worthington), a man who apparently has been rescued from the past, though Connor wonders if instead he's been sent from the future as a foil to his plan. As Connor and Wright push deep into the heart of Skynet, they get closer and closer to learning the secret behind the organization's mission to wipe humankind off the planet.
THE BUZZ: Terminator Salvation is increasingly reminding me of Iron Man in that it capitalized on Comic-Con to get fans of the saga off of McG's back and on his side instead. After a spirited presentation in San Diego, where the director eloquently described the story's theme of an individual's free will versus their destiny, the haters unfolded their arms and realized that the man up on the stage isn't the same guy who made Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. In all honestly, once Christian Bale signed up to play John Connor, I sensed that T2 might wind up being the second best Terminator movie ever. And with Sam Worthington bending the story's mythology a bit more, do you really need a Schwarzenegger cameo here? More memorable awesomeness from Comic-Con was Anton Yelchin's quote regarding his ambition for his character, Kyle Reese: To show "how Michael Biehn became so awesome that Linda Hamilton would sleep with him." Director: Shawn Levy Stars: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Amy Adams (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: Security guard Larry Daley (Stiller) infiltrates the Smithsonian Institute in order to rescue Jedediah (Wilson) and Octavius (Coogan), who have been shipped to the museum by mistake. THE BUZZ: Similar ideas abound for this sequel, but even naysayers might admit that a better cast has been assembled around Ben Stiller for his second Washington, D.C. adventure. (It's pretty amazing that Stiller has three active franchises going, if you believe reports that Little Fockers is getting made). Here's a first look at the film, and a glimpse at how much Stiller has aged over the past couple years. P.S. Is it just me, or does Amy Adams seem kind of annoying as Amelia Earhart? Granted, she's probably way less irritating than Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt, who returns for the sequel (along with two handfuls of new faces), but pinched and snippy just aren't her colors. Director: Pete Docter Bob Peterson Stars: Edward Asner, Jordan Nagai, John Ratzenberger (Full Cast) Studio: Buena Vista Home Entertainment (BVHE) The Plot: By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn't alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip. THE BUZZ: Pixar takes to the skies again, this time with buddy-story specialists Pete Docter and Bob Peterson bringing the charm to us in 3D (in "select" theaters, anyway). These days, I support anything that strips away my senses of irony and sarcasm, and Up's teaser trailer (located above) is wonderfully restorative. At Comic-Con last year, Docter described how the movie was influenced by an unreachable range of Venezuelan mountains, and a septuagenarian 's wish to fulfill the dreams he made with his now-departed wife when he was a younger man. I got misty. Plus, Docter went on to say that his movie will have some easter eggs for upcoming Pixar projects. More news as Pixar/Disney leaks it. Director: Sam Raimi Stars: Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Ruth Livier (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: A loan officer (Lohman) ordered to evict an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse, which subsequently turns her life into a living hell. Desperate, she turns to a seer for help, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point. THE BUZZ: Foreclosure would be a kinda scary title, too ... Check out Sam Raimi, returning to the horror genre before travels back to Gotham for a couple more Spider-Man movies. With a tip of the hat to George A. Romero, Raimi has found a way to comment on the housing crisis, and I can imagine his tones will be bitter, wicked, and (hopefully) subtle. No offense to Ellen Page, but I am relieved she opted out of the movie, making room for Lohman, who is starting to take on more mainstream roles, albeit ones that are offbeat and, like, interesting.
